Although the destruction and degradation of Brazilian forests (including the Amazon) has a serious impact on climate change, as will be discussed from December 7-18 at the UN Climate Change Summit, in Copenhagen, Denmark, it is by no means the only major issue, as many people, including Lula's Government and their recommended "climate ministry", would have us believe.
The contamination of rivers and seas caused by the lack of public policies for the management, treatment and disposal of garbage, especially industrial and hospital waste, as well as a lack of investments in new technologies to produce clean energy, recycle materials and provide environmental education for conscious consumption, proves that - in terms of climate change - simply planting trees or reducing deforestation isn’t enough. We need to go much further.
